How do I add a folder?
Tap Add folder on the home screen, or tap one of the suggestions (Documents, Movies, Pictures, and WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business or Telegram saved files if those apps are installed). Android opens its own folder picker.
- Go to the folder you want.
- Tap the button at the bottom of the picker, labelled "Use this folder", "Allow access to …" or "Select" depending on your Android version. If a confirmation dialog follows, tap "Allow".
- In the dialog that follows, tap "Allow".
CleanEase can then see and move files in that folder only. On older Android versions, if you don't see your phone's storage in the picker, open the menu at the top left and pick your phone's name; if it isn't there, use the menu at the top right and turn on "Show internal storage".
I picked the wrong folder. What now?
Nothing moves until you review a list and confirm. To stop using a folder, open Settings and remove it under Added folders. Removing a folder releases CleanEase's access to it and deletes none of your files.
One thing to know: once a folder is removed, CleanEase can no longer restore or delete that folder's trash items. They stay in its hidden .cleanease-trash folder until you delete them with a file manager. If you may want something back, restore it before removing the folder.
Why can't I pick Android/data or the Download folder?
Android doesn't let apps pick the top level of storage, Android/data, Android/obb or the Download folder itself. This is an Android rule, not a CleanEase setting. You can still pick a folder inside Download.
CleanEase works with your phone's internal storage only; SD cards, USB drives and cloud storage can't be added. WhatsApp chats (Databases) and backups (Backups) are never listed or deleted.
Where is the trash, and how long are files kept?
When you delete files, they move to a hidden folder named .cleanease-trash inside the folder they came from. They are kept for 30 days, and restoring puts them back where they were.
- CleanEase doesn't run in the background. Expired items are deleted the next time you open it.
- Trashed files still take up space until you empty the trash or they expire.
- File manager apps with "show hidden files" turned on can see the folder. Deleting files there deletes them permanently.
- If your Android version can't move a file to trash, CleanEase says so before deleting, and that file can't be restored.
What happens to the trash if I uninstall CleanEase?
Uninstalling CleanEase or clearing its data does not delete the files in its trash. They stay in their .cleanease-trash folders and are no longer deleted automatically, because CleanEase's records of them are gone. Empty the trash in CleanEase first, or use a file manager later to restore or delete them.
Which permissions does CleanEase need?
None. This version requests no Android permissions, so you won't see a permission pop-up, and it has no internet permission, so it can't send anything off your phone. It only opens the folders you choose in Android's folder picker. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
Why does "Space released" differ from my phone's storage?
- Trash still uses space. Files moved to trash stay on your phone for 30 days. "Space released" appears only for files that were actually deleted, for example when you empty the trash or choose "Delete permanently now".
- Different scope. CleanEase measures the folders you added. Your phone's storage figure covers everything on the phone, and Android may take a moment to update it.
- Units and rounding. CleanEase counts 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes. Other apps and system screens may round differently or use other units.
How do I contact you?
Email [email protected]. CleanEase has no analytics and no in-app feedback form, so we only know what you tell us. A useful message includes your phone model, your Android version, what you tapped and what you expected. Please don't send file contents or private file names.
